Broome International Airport and Qantas Sign 5-year Agreement
26th Sep 2023

Broome International Airport (BIA) has signed a 5-year air services agreement with Qantas, setting the scene for continued growth in airline connections to Broome, as the gateway to the Kimberley.

The air services agreement (ASA) replaces the previous five-year agreement between BIA and Qantas.

More than 400,000 passengers a year transit through Broome Airport, with Qantas operating connections between Broome and Perth year-round, and direct Melbourne and Sydney services between April and October.

A key commitment of the Air Service Agreement includes investment in upgrades to the airport that will provide a better customer experience.

Earlier this year Qantas also announced it will construct a brand new Broome Regional Lounge with double the seating capacity of the existing lounge, following strong demand from the premium leisure market. The new lounge is expected to open in late 2024.

“The agreement we have reached with Qantas demonstrates confidence in Broome and the Kimberley as an important destination for both business and leisure travel. The recent upgrades in the terminal, supported by Qantas, along with other planned capital investment, will see BIA developed to meet the capacity needs of airlines as demand for travel to Broome continues to grow” said Broome International Airport CEO, Craig Shaw.

“Signing this five-year agreement reflects the positive nature of the relationship between BIA, and Qantas and the various elements of the agreement will support improving the overall passenger experience, along with setting the scene for expanded services at the airport.”

QantasLink CEO John Gissing said the airline was pleased to be signing a new five-year agreement with Broome International Airport.

“We’ve had constructive discussions with Broome Airport as we’ve worked through this agreement about improving efficiency and customer experience,” Mr Gissing said.

“Qantas is now offering more seats to and from Broome than pre-COVID, will open a new and bigger lounge in late 2024 and continues to promote Broome to our customers.”

Broome is one of Australia’s premier tourist destinations, is a gateway to the wonders of the Kimberley and the airport is a crucial service provider to local industry.

BIA caters for scheduled jet and charter services, heliport services for the critical oil and gas industry, as well as general aviation flights supporting tourism and other connections to the wider region. In addition to this, reflecting Broome’s role as a regional service centre, it is a key base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Border force Coastwatch operations.

BIA and the company’s contractors employ 90 direct staff members generating almost 800 jobs in Broome and the Kimberley region. BIA is investing in upgrades to its facilities with over $15M being invested in recent upgrades to the terminal and landside facilities.
